At first glance, the Intel X79 chipset looks pretty similar to the X68 Express chipset. However, the main difference between the platforms lies with the sockets. This chipset is easily one of the most advanced chipsets on the market. The Intel X79 supports PCIE 2.0 in 40 lanes while the Z68 only supported 16 lanes. This gives the Intel X79 the ability to support up to 5 graphics cards. When you buy the motherboard, you get a full box that will open to reveal the motherboard through a plastic sheet.
